Wake Up
(Excerpt from the Winter on Cape Ann and Other Stories / Go West.)
good morning good morning.
wake up wake up.
the day is starting.
wake up wake up.
the night is over,
the dreams have dreamt.
the sheep have jumped
and the pillows dent
is just starting
to come undone.
the day is here.
it’s just begun.
wake up wake up.
don’t hesitate.
there is no time.
you should not wait
so go ahead
and abate
your sleepy state
or else you may
not escape.
this just may be
your awful fate:
to stay in bed
till it’s too late.
wake up wake up.
your eyes need light.
don’t scrunch your nose
and squeeze them tight.
open wide and
greet today.
say hello.
it’s here to stay
until tomorrow
when it goes away
cause then today is
yesterday
and tomorrow is
today.
so wake up wake up
you sleepy head.
wake up. wake up.
that’s what i said.
wake up. wake up.
wake up. wake up.
wake up. wake up.
get out of bed!
